Sounds to me a bit as if that rock formation was a portal into an alternate reality, one in which circumstances were slightly, if not vastly, different. Kit might've made that whole trip without going through the arch, which is hinted at, and in another Universe gone through it, which is only narrative given in plot. Just a wild thought.
